Koh Rong – 7km Beach

Day 3 was finally Beach Day! Along with Seb & Evelyn, we got up early (ish for us!), and left before 9am to beat the midday heat. It was a 1.5-2hr walk to the other side of the island and to the mythical ‘7km White Beach’ following Beast’s instructions;

– walk along the beach for about 15 minutes
– when you see the white chair & table, walk towards it
– walk along the jungle
– turn left when you hit the big, wide, red, dirt track
– walk for a long time
– turn right at the Khmer house
– walk for a long time
– turn left at the T-junction
– turn right at the backwards sign (that had actually fallen off when we were there)
– walk through the jungle
– then, the beach!

These were actually pretty good instructions and the only thing keeping us going in the hot searing heat – I ended up using a big leaf tucked under my bag strap as a shoulder patch/sun protector – was thinking about the cool, clear water at the end of the hike.

And, it delivered.

There was no one else on the beach at all, just white sand stretching for kilometres, and clear water shining emerald green from the sun. Bliss. We all practically ran towards the water and jumped in.

No one else around; a rarity on a SE Asian beach nowadays!

F***Yeah, we made it to 7km beach - remote, and clean, what more could we ask for!

After taking a billion photos, the four of us decided to walk towards the village on the far end of the beach to find some food. We passed by a pretty fancy resort, Sokha Base Camp (prices started around $90 per night), that had just opened up. As it was low season, the staff were pretty bored, and were really keen on a chat, and even invited us to play a game of beach vollegball with them (unfortunately, we still had the hike back home so sadly declined). Definitely a resort for families and honeymooners, and will be very popular since they would have the 7km white beach on their doorstop.

We passed a small school on the beach, and all of the kids came running out yelling, 'hello, hello, what is your name?'

After lunch, Seb & Lionel found a pier and entertained us with various jumping poses.

Then I thought I could join in.

But I couldn’t. I was too scared!

Hiking back, we found a baby learning to walk on the dirt road while his whole family watched on. So adorable, but very confused by our presence

7km beach was everything you would want from a deserted beach, no crowds, less rubbish, soft white sand, and clear, clean water. It was a bit further out and while we all cursed the hike back home, we all agreed it had been so bloody worth it.

Just don’t be these guys.

Such a beautiful day to check out the 7 km beach
