After trying to teach Emma water confidence in Singapore with moderate success, she made very impressive progress in Kuala Lumpur! So good in fact that she is now very comfortable in the ocean and can dive underwater comfortably. Water can be scary for some, so I am very proud Emma is learning fast. The Perhentian islands are known mainly for what is underneath the water so we looked around for snorkeling trips. Any trip on the Long Beach side starts at 50RM per person. Over at Coral Bay there’s plenty of options starting from 30RM including gear and some even breakfast. We decided to go with Fatimah and signed up…

Perhentian Kecil Accommodation: The Best Options On A Tiny Island
.We had heard about the “Perhentians” from another backpacker and decided to check them out. There are two islands and you have to decide whether you visit Perhentian Kecil or Besar. As a general rule Perhentian Besar is more resorts and Perhentian Kecil backpackers friendly. Because we are cheap, we chose Perhentian Kecil on a whim. We quickly realised that Perhentian Kecil Accommodation is hard to come by. This is true for Perhentian islands accommodation in general. So below I have have compiled a list of the best accommodation we came across. The boat operator asked us where we were going. Lionel said the first place he had thought of…

A journey to the Perhentian Islands – Malaysia
Went to book our bus ticket to Jerteh (the town near the jetty where you can get a boat to the Perhentian Islands). Went to the bus terminal near the Titiwangsa train stop but all of the buses heading to Jerteh that evening were booked out. Panicking a little (as we realised we may have left it a bit late) we headed to the bus terminal at the PWTC stop (one stop away) where there was a larger number of interstate buses. We got stopped by a ticket guy who said that all of evening buses to Jerteh were booked out but that he had special ‘express’ tickets that would…

Kuala Lumpur
We stayed in a wonderful place, swam on the rooftop pool during a storm, walked the city, commuted on the painful public transport and visited the Batu Caves.

Banana leaf curry by hand
Tonight for dinner we met up with our friend from Uni and she took us out in Bangsar for some really nice banana leaf curry. We ate with our hands as it is supposed to be. Bangsar is one of the nicest parts of Kuala Lumpur that we have seen, even went for a beer afterwards.

From luxury to an overnight bus trip! From KL to Perhentian Islands
Having spent the last two nights in a luxury studio apartment that we found via Airbnb (complete with a rooftop pool!) we know we’re going to struggle with the 7-8 hour overnight bus trip tomorrow to get to the East Coast of Malaysia. We’ve decided it’s time to check out some islands and go snorkeling so we will be bus-ing it and then taking a speedboat to Pulau (island) Perhentian and then Pulau Redang. This will also be the first time where we won’t have already booked accommodation – currently we’ve been booking one or two days in advance using each hostel’s pretty fast Internet. According to the Internet machine,…

Impressions of Melaka
Not much to do here, except walk around, eat and take tourist shots. Most places had a few locals sitting there during the day, but when approached they were ‘closed’. At night much the same and the 24 hour hawker center was shut at lunch time. At first a bit irritated, once we embraced the doing nothing of Melaka and settled in a courtyard cafe, we quite enjoyed it.

Melaka (Malacca) – doing nothing at all!
We arrived in Melaka yesterday afternoon, and after dumping our bags and getting out of my ridiculous travel pants, we decided to check out the area. There is not a great area to travel, but there’s tons of hidden nooks and cranies in the old town. We firstly made our way to the obviously touristy place of the old Dutch square. Here there’s a fountain opposite the river, some ruins and churches. After sitting by the fountain, watching people go by, watching them take some pictures, and inadvertently photo-bombing the said pictures, we headed up the hill to check out the view. There were quite a lot of tourists around…

Goodies Guest House – Johor Bahru
GGH is quite a bit further out from the city centre. We followed the very precise and good instructions that was sent to us when we booked, with minor hassle. They listed two options to get to the Guest House, taxi from JB Central to GGH (approx 15RM), or bus from JB Central (2RM) to a main street and then a taxi from there to GGH (should be 5RM). We went with the bus option thinking we could manage at least this, but didn’t realise that our taxi driver, firstly, had started the meter at 6RM (we were later told by a local that it should’ve started at 3RM), and…
